Part 2 - Getting inspired...
"To build a city where it is impossible to build a city is madness in itself, but to build there one of the most elegant and grandest of cities is the madness of genius."
Alexander Herzen
Venice is a city steeped in history, architectural wonders, and unforgettable views. Every corner tells a story, and its unique location on the lagoon inspires designers, architects, and travelers alike. Today, I invite you on a walk through Venice to look at its architecture from the perspective of an interior and landscape designer—how can this city influence our projects, spaces, and approach to design?
Culture and History in the City’s Walls: Venice is imbued with centuries of history. Everywhere, we see influences from Byzantium, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque styles. Each of these styles can inspire our interiors—from wall mosaics to arches and columns, down to the details in doors and windows.
Byzantine Splendor: The Venetian mosaics, especially those in St. Mark’s Basilica, can be a wonderful inspiration for creating texture in a project. How can we incorporate a touch of this golden aesthetic into our interiors?
Gothic Influence: Venetian Gothic windows (with pillars and lancets) are a perfect example of how Gothic architecture can inspire design—consider how these shapes might appear in our garden or interior projects.
Bridges and Canals as Design Motifs: Venice is a city of bridges—each unique and a marvel of both architecture and function. The Rialto Bridge, with its distinctive arch, is just one example. How can this harmony of architecture and nature (with water as an integral part of the landscape) influence our design approach?
Merging Spaces: Just as the canals shape Venice’s layout, in interior and garden design, we can explore ways to create flowing transitions between different spaces.
Venetian Colors and Materials: Venice is also distinguished by a unique color palette—warm ochres, terracottas, browns, and delicate greens and blues. These colors are ideal for creating interiors that evoke warmth and serene elegance. Materials like marble, Murano glass, and wood are also essential to the Venetian aesthetic.
Inspiration for My Own Projects: Venice is a treasure trove of inspiration for every designer. Paying attention to its details can inspire elements we can bring into our daily work. For instance, you could create a “Venetian chic” space by adding signature elements like mosaics or sculptures. The architecture, history, and culture of this city open endless possibilities to incorporate its elegance, harmony, and cultural richness into our own projects.
I hope it'll inspire you to seek your own inspirations either in Venice or any other place you aim to visit next and good luck! :)
