In this post I would like to focus on the 2021 Venice Biennale of Architecture
The 17th International Architecture Exhibition takes place from 22 May to 21 November 2021in Venice Biennale Gardens and also in the newly open space of Arsenale in Venice. Although you can also find numerous pavilions as you stroll along the Venetian canals. Below you can find a map of the main events locations.
I encourage all the architecture and ecology enthusiast to take a trip to Venice and see "How will we live together?" in the face of the changing climate, covid and the big impact of social media on our daily lives. If you wish to buy a ticket or get more information just click on the map below.
“How will we live together? (...) We are asking architects this question because we believe they have the ability to present more inspiring answears than politics has been thus far offering (...) because architects are good conveners of different actors and experts in the design and construction process. We are asking architects because we, as architects, are preocupied with shaping the spaces in which people live together and because we frequently imagine these setting differently than do the social norms that dictate them.”
Hashim Sarkis
The 2021 Architecture Exhibition includes 112 participants from 46 countries, with a growing delegation from Africa, Latin America and Asia. The main task for the participants was to answer the question: "HOW WILL WE LIVE TOGETHER?" The artworks were divided into 5 subcathegories: Among Diverse Beings, As New Households, As Emerging Communities, Across Borders, As One Planet. I'm writting here a bit more on the first two, that I've found the most relevant for the "interior and landscape design" topic.
Among Diverse Beings
This part is all focused on human beings and their needs, that are still changing across the years. How we architects should jump out from our comfort zone of designing interiors or landscapes as we used to, back to few decades ago. Facing how the world is changing and struggling with its problems: climate change, political desicions pushing people to leave their homes as refugees, little focus on sustainibility during last decades, big impact of social media on daily life, covid that also lead to new life patterns like houseworking, and so on...
The subject is presented in Arsenale. I must say that the space is stunning and just perfect for that. Not only looks cool, like the big industrial factory with hudge stone columns, but also gives a lot of space and possibilities for diverse instalations.
As soon as we enter there are 1:1 scale size, metal, corofully painted scuptures of people by Nigerian artist Peju Alatise. Later on the left we can see a costume for the future "cyborg" bodies. The explanaition just next to the exhibits starts: "We have become cyborgs. New technologies have entered our bodies to anhance our performance and augment our awerness...". This room proposes new designs and new ways of dealing with our bodies in the future. It also raises awerness among other being that coexist with us and should be respected (bees, birds, soils, fungi, etc.)
As New Households
That was, for sure, the most interesting part for me as interior designer. One of the exhibiotions had extremly interesting cardboard model, showing the interiors of the houses all over the world. You can compare there the typical households from New York, Delhi, Cuba, Phillipines, Russia etc.
Many new technologies and typologies for the future model of households can be found, as well as new ideologies of sustainable coexistence. In the big Arsenale space there is even a collective experiment in biotechnological architecture ongoing. Huge glass tubes are full of living cultures of spirulina - edible bacterium that can transform pollutants from the air into nutritious foods. Thats amazing how many fields mix around the topic, not only artists, architects, engineers but even biotechnologists took part in the Exhibition.
Below some more of the photos that we took during the exhibition.
I hope that my short article will inspire you to visit the Biennale exhibition. I believe that the wide content might be interesting not only for architecture pasionates but also art or ecologie enthusiasts.
I invite you also to check soon the upcoming posts about my trip to Venice and to Mozambique Island :)
